Recipe: Unicorn Sprinkle Doughnuts

Did you know that Friday is National Doughnut Day? I’ll most likely be spending the day sleeping, but I believe National Doughnut Day should be treated like one’s birthday, so that means it’s National Doughnut Week! I love birthday week. I use it as an excuse to make everything sparkly (like these doughnuts), use Hotline Bling as my alarm tone, and have Andrew do the dishes and clean the litter box. Oh wait, that’s like every day… moving on!

Sparkling sprinkles with pink and purple glaze, these Unicorn Sprinkle Doughnuts are perfect for National Doughnut Day (which is every day, obviously).

If you couldn’t already tell, I’m in love with the sprinkle mixes from Sweetapolita. Okay, not that you guys would know otherwise, but I totally just got distracted for five minutes and geeked out over all the new sprinkle mixes she has made. I mean, look at this Buried Treasure Twinkle Sprinkle Medley! I literally can’t. ANYWAY, moving on. Again. Maybe I should think of a new variant of “moving on.” How about OMG WHAT IS THAT BEHIND YOU!?!

It’s totally possible Andrew, and I binge watched almost the entire first season of Scream Queens yesterday. #cahoots

So what was I talking about again? OH sprinkles! Like the Unicorn Bark and somewhat like the Care Bear Doughnuts, this recipe, while delicious, is more about making something look fun. And awesome. And covered with sprinkles and lustre dust. It uses the same cake doughnut and glaze recipe as the Care Bear Doughnuts, but instead of drizzling the glaze, I dipped the doughnuts once in the purple glaze, let it set for a few minutes, and then dipped them again in pink glaze before going crazy with the sprinkles and lustre dust. PRO TIP: Unless you want to get lustre dust EVERYWHERE, follow the instructions about using a paint brush and NOT your fingers. If you are okay with the cabinets, countertop, air, your hands, and hair covered in pink lustre dust, then, by all means, do not follow the instructions.

That long-winded paragraph was my way of telling you that this isn’t really a recipe (except for, you know, the recipe part), but an idea for a fun way to decorate doughnuts. Want to make them purple and blue? Go for it? Think that “unicorn” means everything should be white with only a little bit of color as Andrew so kindly pointed out to me yesterday after I made a purple, pink, blue, and iridescent tassel garland and called it the Unicorn Garland? Then go ahead and be a buttface and take all the fun out of decorating things in a unicorn-themed way! Or do it because that is how you want to decorate them because all ideas for decorating doughnuts in a unicorn theme are awesome, just like you. I promise I won’t call you a buttface, unless your name is Andrew, and you are married to me, and ruined the fun I was having while making my tassel garland, but I digress (see! New variant of moving on!).

Doesn’t that photo just scream unicorn?! Well, not actually scream, because that would be strange and I’m not living in Muppet World. It’s probably recipe time now, isn’t it?

UNICORN SPRINKLE DOUGHNUTS INGREDIENTS

  • The cake doughnut and glaze ingredients from here.
  • Food coloring (any colors you would like)
  • Any sort of decorating accoutrements (I used sprinkles and lustre dust)

UNICORN SPRINKLE DOUGHNUTS DIRECTIONS

  1. Follow directions here.
  2. Decorate.
  3. Say “How easy was that?” in your best Ina Garten voice.
  4. Eat all the doughnuts while trying to clean lustre dust off your eyebrows because you didn’t follow the instructions, but it’s not working so you decide to leave it and say it’s the newest trend when someone asks.

xx
