DIY: How to Make Faux Druzy Pendants

Have you ever been painting your nails, only to smudge one before you finish? Maybe the brush pulls up some of the layers because you didn’t have the right base coat or you knock it against something before it dries. It isn’t awful, so you try and fix it by adding another layer, only now it looks worse. Now the other nails are done, and you don’t want to get out the polish remover in case you mess up yet ANOTHER nail? At this point, you don’t want to start over, and I don’t know about you, but this is the point that I just start adding glitter to that nail because glitter hides everything. Those are also the phases I went through with this project.

Why am I telling you all this? Because sometimes craft projects don’t turn out how you expected, or they are a disaster, and I don’t want this to be a place where you lovely people come and think “ugh, everything always turns out perfect,” like I know I do sometimes when looking at other blogs. I totally get it; I’m a designer; you only want to show your best work, but sometimes I sit down and go “hmm… I wonder what will happen if I try and add some paint to glue and then stick things together with it?” Spoiler alert: You end up covered in paint that is now sticky and trying to dry on you while also sticking to everything else. Or, this strawberry meyer lemonade pie? The main photo is the first pie I made, which turned out to be crazy runny. So I made a second pie. Also runny. I finally got it right on the third try (and ate a WHOLE lot of pie). So, if you try to make any of the projects here on this blog, or any fun crafty thing that comes to mind and it doesn’t turn out the way you thought, don’t be discouraged. And add more glitter. Or tell everyone that’s how you meant it to turn out.

SO these faux druzy pendants. I’ve started calling them faux faux druzy pendants because they sort of look like druzy, but more they sort of look like the faux version of faux druzy, but ended up being kind of cool in the end. MAN, I am doing an excellent job at hyping up these projects lately! It’s like I should work in marketing or something… oh wait. Ready for the supply list?

SUPPLIES FOR FAUX FAUX DRUZY PENDANTS

  • Blank cabochon pendants
  • 1/2 ounce mixed resin (I’ll go into more detail about resin at a later day, but if you’ve never used resin before it is SO EASY)
  • A mix of different types of glitter

DIRECTIONS

  1. Get everything set out and ready to go before you mix your resin. Depending on the temperature and humidity, you will want to use your resin within about 30 minutes of mixing it.
  2. Mix up 1/2 ounce resin according to package directions.
  3. After the stirring step, add in a bunch of the crystal glitter mix and stir until combined.
  4. Carefully pour the resin into your pendants without overflowing them (1/2 ounce of resin doesn’t seem like a lot, but it will make about 10 – 15 pendants).
  5. After pouring, cover the surface of each pendant with the shaved ice glitter.
  6. Allow to dry for up to 24 hours and then shake off the excess glitter. The resin will take about three more days to cure completely, but it will be dry to the touch, just don’t seal it away in a bag or box until three days have passed.
  7. Add to a chain or keychain or just leave them out on your dining room table for a week while trying to figure out what to do with them like I did!

While these pendants are still pretty cool and totally sparkly, they don’t have a druzy look I had in mind. But not to worry! I bought some glass glitter (what I should have used the first time) and will soon have another post for y’all using that and also probably something about me stabbing my fingers with glass glitter but will result in some REAL faux druzy pendants. This tip goes without saying but, LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES THAT I HAVEN’T MADE YET BUT KNOW I WILL IN THE FUTURE. Oh, and become a psychic. A psychic that wears awesome sparkly jewelry and hasn’t stabbed their fingers with glass glitter.
