DIY: How to Make Clay Gemstone Jewelry

We are having a strange summer here in Seattle because it’s a typical summer for once. The past few years have been crazy hot for around here, usually staying over 80+ with stretches in the 90s. Except now it’s staying cooler and cloudy and lame. The only upside is that it isn’t super hot at night in our apartment because basically, no one in Seattle has air conditioning. The hallways and lobby of our apartment building have it, which is strange, but our building is also newer. I love the heat. In fact, I’m writing this as I’m in warm PJ pants, a sweater, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket, and holding a hot cup of coffee. In July. Because it’s cold and cloudy and damp which makes it seem colder and I’m a big whiny wimp when it comes to the cold.

The good part to all of this weird-yet-normal-summer? Zero percent guilt over staying inside all day and making things like this DIY Gemstone Jewelry with clay gemstones. It also gives me time to become awesome at segues. The smooth transition from one thing to the next kind, not to be confused with Segways, which I will never be excellent at because I refuse to get near one. It also leaves me a lot of time to continue being awesome at being modest. Obviously, I’m getting an A+ in that department.

I have 0% guilt about staying inside all day and making things. #craftersanonymousClick To Tweet

SUPPLIES FOR DIY CLAY GEMSTONE JEWELRY

  • Gemstone mold (I used this one)
  • Polymer clay in whichever colors you’d like, I prefer Sculpty III because it’s softer
  • Paint
  • Glue
  • Glitter and Diamond Glaze
  • Clear Glaze
  • Blank pinbacks or rings

DIRECTIONS FOR DIY CLAY GEMSTONE JEWELRY

  1. Press clay into the mold while trying to get the back as flat as possible.
  2. Carefully remove clay and trim around edges if needed.
  3. Bake according to package directions.
  4. If you decide to paint/glitter: Paint clay and once dry, add a thin layer of Diamond Glaze and sprinkle on glitter. Repeat if necessary.
  5. If you used colored clay: The clay will come out with a matte finish, if you’d like it to be a gloss, spray with one or two coats if clear glaze.
  6. Once everything is dry, take your pinback or blank ring and glue (I like to use E6000) to back and allow to dry.
  7. Wear your new Beyonce-sized DIY gemstone jewelry while doing this everywhere you go.
