Do you remember the episode of Parks & Rec where April and Andy are living together but have nothing in their house, like plates, cleaning supplies, and they share one fork and a Frisbee as a plate? That is what I feel like our apartment is like right now. Except instead of a lack of things like furniture, it’s an overflow craft supplies, and boxes of things from my desk at work. Well, and a lack of plates and silverware because they are all dirty. Who ever would have thought that working from home equals spending more time in your home and more time to mess it up? Oh, you did? And it should have been obvious? Now I wish I had that marshmallow gun that Andy uses on Ben.
NOTE TO SELF: Buy marshmallow gun.
It was my love of Parks & Rec that led me a few months ago to this Buzzfeed article titled, If Andy Dwyer Quotes Were Motivational Posters. Obviously, I promptly stole the last one and made it my FB cover photo. Then, last week at 2 AM, I had the brilliant idea to turn it into a real life FB cover photo, and it took me a good 45 seconds to realize that is a thing, and it’s called a poster, or banner, or wall hanging. The best and most embarrassing things always happen at 2 AM. After I woke up the next morning and had multiple cups of coffee, I remembered that I’d had this idea the night before and started this post on how to make a felt banner!
Making this felt banner is crazy easy and uses all glue, so there is no stabbing yourself in the fingers. Less stabby = better. I’ve even made a downloadable pattern! Just print, cut out, and trace onto some felt! And then cut out some more things, and glue the letters on, and add something to hang it by, and tie some string to it. I swear it’s easy.
The felt for this project came from Benzie Design, one of my favorite shops to buy felt. They have a broad range of colors, and the felt is wool, so it doesn’t have that gross plasticky feel like the inexpensive felt you get in the kids section at large craft stores. Add in glue, a bronze rod, and string and you have the most awesome sauce motivational felt banner ever.
DIY FELT BANNER SUPPLIES
DIRECTIONS
- Print pattern (two pages) and follow trimming instructions.
- Trace banner shape and letters onto felt (I used a pencil to trace lightly so the marks wouldn’t show).
- Cut out.
- Arrange letters onto the felt. Once they are how you like, glue each letter using craft glue.
- Once letters are dry, turn banner over and put a line of glue along the top. Center the rod just below the line of glue and fold the felt over the brass rod. Depending on your glue, you may need to weigh it down with a book until it dries.
- After the glue dries, tie the string to either side and your felt banner is ready to hang!
- Admire your awesome sauce work and tell your husband that you are going to cover the living room wall with DIY felt banners (sorry, Andrew).
